Navigating Swimsuit Waters May 18, 2010

In honor of swimsuit season (and swimsuit sales this week at Old Navy & Target), today’s topic is how to find a flattering swimsuit for your body type.  You may not believe that different bodies all have a suit that looks good on them, but I hope to make you think differently.  Read more to find out what kind of outfit you should be searching for in your quest for cute summer swimwear.

Small on Top

Look For:

  • Tops with padding or demi-style support and adjustable straps
  • Ruffled tops
  • Bandeau tops
  • Triangle tops
  • Separates, so you can get different sizes in top & bottom if needed

Avoid:

  • Avoid tops with too much fabric

Big on Top

Look For:

  • Halter-top bikinis that are banded around the midriff and can be tied in the back
  • One-piece swimsuits with some structure in the bust, such as soft foam cups or a shelf bra.
  • Straight cut bust styles such as a classic tank
  • Wide shoulder straps
  • Separates, so you can get different sizes in top & bottom if needed

Avoid:

  • Bandeau tops and tri-tops that offer minimal coverage.

Short Legs or Torso

Look For:

  • Suits cut high on the thigh (makes your legs look longer)
  • Solid bottom bikini that sits low on the hips with a printed halter top

Avoid:

  • Boy shorts
  • Skirted bikinis

Long Body Shape

Look For:

  • Embellishments at the hips and bust-line
  • Horizontal stripes and textured fabrics (stretch terry, velvet)
  • Bright colors
  • One-piece suit with cutouts
  • Boy shorts
  • Ruffled skirts

Avoid:

  • Vertical stripes
  • High necklines
  • Dark, solid colors

No Waist

Look For:

  • One-piece suit with a high-thigh cut
  • Belted waistline on a one-piece suit
  • Bikinis with rings, ruffles and bows.

Avoid:

  • Solid-colored or horizontal-striped one-pieces

Wide shoulders

Look For:

  • Bikini bottoms that have lots of color/print
  • Accents at the hips such as ties, belts and sashes
  • Moderate cut bottoms
  • Wide shoulder straps
  • Square necklines

Avoid:

  • Plunging neck lines
  • Teeny, tiny bikini bottoms

Plus size figure

Look For:

  • One-piece swimsuits with lace or mesh inserts
  • Adjustable ruching detail at the hip
  • High-cut on the leg
  • Dark, cool colors
  • Swirling or V patterns

Avoid:

  • Too much fabric
  • White
  • Bright neons
  • Textured suits (stretch terry, velvet)

Too Much Tummy

Look For:

  • Tummy control panel swimsuits
  • Tankinis
  • One-piece with draping around the waist or hips

Avoid:

  • Bikinis
  • Solid-colored one-pieces

Big on Bottom

Look For:

  • Mini-skirted bikinis (not frilly, but smooth)
  • A ruffled or highly decorated top
  • Moderate-cut, solid color bottom bikini with a 3 inch side & a print top
  • One-piece with wide straps, or a strong horizontal neckline

Avoid:

  • Boy shorts
  • Skimpy bottoms
  • Ruffles and details at the hips
