Teenage stars just seem to keep falling, one by one, into the depths of degeneracy. Miley Cyrus is no exception. Her most recent single and music video, Can’t Be Tamed, is a clear message that Miley is anything but innocent. The video itself is pretty distasteful, with dark images of scantily-clad people dancing provocatively in a cage and a busty Miley laying on the ground and making seductive motions. These are not images that we should fill our minds with (Phil. 4:8), and I strongly urge you not to watch this video.
The lyrics to Can’t Be Tamed are also negative. They promote a self-absorbed attitude: “Have to get my way, 24 hours a day / ‘Cause I’m hot like that / Every guy everywhere just gives me mad attention / Like I’m under inspection, I always get the 10s / ‘Cause I’m built like that.” Girls, this kind of attitude may seem self-confident, but it is truly nothing more than pride. Proverbs 11:2 says, “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.”
The chorus to the song repeats: “I can’t be tamed, I can’t be saved, I can’t be blamed, I can’t, I can’t.” Whoa! You can’t be tamed? More like she doesn’t want to be tamed. The same goes for her being saved or blamed. She doesn’t want to be ‘saved’ from her impure lifestyle. And she doesn’t want anyone to blame her for what she does. Basically, this chorus is saying that Miley doesn’t want any judgment passed on her actions. She’s going to do whatever she wants, and everyone else just has to deal with it, even guys she dates. She shows total disrespect for anyone interested in pursuing her, basically telling them she’s going to be wild and they can’t stop her and shouldn’t try to. What a selfish, egotistical view of relationships this presents!
Galatians 5:19-21 says, “The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.” This song and video display all the words that are bolded in the verses above. God’s Word makes it clear that these are sinful attitudes and actions, and the end result of these behaviors is a sad one.
Girls, if we are sincere about our relationship with Christ, we must purify our lives from things that are against Him. We’ve talked about one song/video today, but there are many popular artists, songs and videos that display sinful attitudes and actions. Consider what you’re listening to and whether it is pleasing to Christ. Use Philippians 4:8 to help make your choice about what to fill your mind with: “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”
