It’s easy enough to praise God when things are going our way. His hand is obvious, our needs and/or wants are met, and we are satisfied with what He’s doing. We say God is good because we like the way things have turned out.
But what about when things don’t turn out the way we want? Are we as quick to praise Him when things don’t get better? Or when they go completely wrong? Are you content when God allows things in your life that don’t make you happy? Is He still good when hard things happen?
Check out the story of Larissa and Ian Murphy. To many, it would seem that God had allowed all their good plans to turn out wrong. But they don’t look at it that way. Even in a situation filled with disappointment and sorrow, they continue to not only believe God but also praise Him.
Their story reminds me of a Kutless song:
"When my life is not what I expected
The plans I made have failed
When there's nothing left to steal me away
Will You be enough for me?
Will my broken heart still sing?"
So what about you? Do you trust God this much – to praise Him even when He takes away your dreams? Is He – and just He – enough for you?
What God does in your life is not about you. It’s about Him. He uses the things that happen to you to point people to Him. Sometimes, those are happy things. Somethings, they’re not. But in all things, we can hope and believe that He is working toward a good end (Romans 8:28).
So praise Him in the good times, and I do pray that they will be many for you. But don’t forget that He is also at work in the hard times. His will for you is to glorify Him in all things; make that your purpose as well. He will always be enough for you, if you will let Him be.
